Dear Friends,

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the founding of the Genesee Mountain Village Foundation, and the 9th year that we have been supporting children to attend school in remote regions of China. During our first year of providing support, in 2008, we were able to help eleven children attend school. Since then we have grown to support around 40 students each year. Most of the students we began supporting in the early years of the Foundation have now graduated from high school or university, and those who are able have started to give back and are now helping support other children to attend school. I’m very happy to say that the tradition of giving has now come full circle!

This past winter, I traveled to Yúnnán (云南) to visit many of the children we support in the region, as well as the local officials and agencies that assist us in finding children in need. The beauty of the Yúnnán landscape is astounding, but it also makes for a harsh living environment and helps to isolate remote villages from the larger cities and markets in the region. As a result, these villages remain economically depressed and the need for our support is as great as ever. Despite what we in the west would perceive as very difficult living conditions (to put it mildly), the spirit and generosity of everyone there is evident, as is the gratitude they display for the assistance we’re able to offer. In speaking with the children, I also found the determination they exhibit to succeed in school and better their lives to be uplifting and provide much hope for their future.

Although we would like to support even more students, once we commit to support someone, we are committed to provide funding for them throughout every year of their schooling and that requires conservative long-term planning. With your continued support, we will be able to create a sustainable fund to assist these children throughout their schooling, as well as increase the number of children we’re able to help, because the need for assistance far exceeds what we’re able to provide.

Thank you all for your support!

Jeremy Avise, President
